Monty Python

In the 1975 movie, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, I am known as "Sir Bedivere the Wise." I am so happy that a good actor, Terry Jones, took on my character. I am portrayed as a master of extremely odd logic and extremely loyal to Arthur, which indeed I was.

Modern Literature

Luckily for me, my knightly name has stuck around. Authors such as Rosemary Sutcliff, Gillian Bradshaw, John Ford, and Mary Stewart have given me Lancelot's role has Guinevere's lover. Apparently, I was the original lover, Lancelot came in later.

Burial Place

According to the Arthurian Legend, I was killed and burried at Mount Tryfan, "after many a slaughter, the grave of Bedwyr on the side of Tryfran." Mount Tryfran is a mountain in northern Wales towering over the lake.

Late Life

After the death of King Arthur, I went to a hermitage. A hermitage is a dwelling place for relaxation. I spent the remainder of my life here. Other knights such as Lancelot joined me. It was a great nursing home. We still fought duels, played card games, and had large feasts.

Battle of Camlan

My most famous event occurred at the Battle of Camlan. King Arthur and I were among the few survivors at the battle. King Arthur was badly wounded and asked upon my request to throw Excalibur (the sword) back into the Lady of the Lake. I knew that it wasn't right to throw the sword into the water since it was of such great value but I was commanded to obey my king. King Arthur knew that if the mystical sword was left for anyone to have, it would create some supernatural event. I took the sword and threw it into the water. When I threw it into the water, a hand jumped out and grabbed the sword, slowly sinking back down with it. It was the most unbelievable thing I ever experienced.

Quest

King Arthur sent me on many quests. One quest was to go and pursue King Gwynllyw after he abducted St. Gwladys from her father's court in Brycheiniog. I fought along side Kay and historians say that, "even though he was one-handed no three warriors drew blood in the same field faster than he."

The Winning of Olwen

In the tale of Culhwch and Olwen, I appear at the head of Arthur's court and described as the most handsome man in the world and the wielder of magic lance. Lucky for me! I was called to accompany Culhwch on his quest to take Olwen's hand in marriage. As I traveled wit Culhwch, I had to complete all the impossible tasks given to him by Ysbaddaden. One of these tasks was to help Cei and Goreu kill Wrnach the Giant. Also since Culhwch can't do anything for himself, I rescued Mabon ap Modron from his imprisonment, captured the cauldron of Diwrnach during Arthur's attack on Ireland and hunted for Twrch Trwyth. I am just happy that I humiliated Ysbaddaden and completed all his tasks that I thought I never could do.
